'Wouldn't be surprised': Pundit thinks Liverpool may not be as interested in one manager as some reports claim

Simon Jordan believes that it may have been overstated how seriously interested Liverpool are in one manager as the Reds continue their search for Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

Jurgen Klopp, of course, brought the football world to a standstill in late January. The German announced that he would be leaving Anfield in the summer after an amazing spell on Merseyside.

Of course, Liverpool face a monumental decision over who they bring in to replace Klopp. They have seen from the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal how difficult it can be to replace a legendary manager.

Liverpool may not be as keen on Xabi Alonso as some think

Understandably, Xabi Alonso appears to be the ideal choice for many. He is loved by the Liverpool fans. And he has done an outstanding job with Bayer Leverkusen, taking the side to the brink of the Bundesliga title this season.

Liverpool are well informed on Xabi Alonso’s contract situation. But speaking on talkSPORT, Simon Jordan suggested that, given his lack of experience, it would not be a shock to him if Liverpool were not quite as keen on the Spaniard as some would expect.

“We’re talking about a guy that, put aside Sociedad B, a guy that’s managed 71 games. So we are at the very beginning of his managerial career in terms of his experience, his expertise and his understanding of the principles of management. With that I think, when you look at Klopp after his management period at Mainz and Dortmund, he had a lot more games under his belt, and a lot more experience and a lot more success. And questions because he had the argument that he burned teams out quickly and what lessons he learned from that,” he said.

“I personally wouldn’t be surprised if the indications of Liverpool’s interest in Alonso are slightly more overstated than we are led to believe.”

Big call to not appoint Spaniard

It would be a big risk to opt for anyone other than Alonso. Ultimately, he does appear to be the popular choice amongst the supporters.

Obviously, that is not the only factor the Liverpool board will consider. But anyone else they turn to is going to be under additional pressure because they are not Jurgen Klopp and they are not Xabi Alonso.

If they do go down a different path, that manager is definitely going to need to hit the ground running.
