'Bonkers': Will Buxton reacts to latest Max Verstappen stat he's read after Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

F1TV presenter Will Buxton says the latest stat he’s read around Red Bull driver Max Verstappen is bonkers.

Verstappen continued his dominant start to the new F1 season with a comfortable victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix on Saturday.

And in doing so, he brought up a milestone that left Buxton stunned.

It wasn’t quite the ‘grand slam’ that Verstappen enjoyed in Jeddah, with Charles Leclerc snatching the fastest lap for Ferrari on the final tour.

But he still won the race by more than 13 seconds ahead of teammate Sergio Perez, having qualified more than three tenths ahead of the pack on Friday.

It already looks as if it would take a monumental turnaround to prevent Verstappen romping to a fourth straight world title.

He won the first of those championships in the final race of the season against Lewis Hamilton in 2021.

But since then, Verstappen has enjoyed far more one-sided title-winning campaigns.

Since the start of the 2022 season, he’s won 36 out of 46 races, and finished in the top three 40 times.

In fact, he’s only come home lower than second once in the last 25 events.

Will Buxton in awe of Max Verstappen stat

Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Buxton reacted to a post from The Race stating that Verstappen had achieved his 100th podium in Jeddah, becoming the seventh driver to achieve that feat.

He added that more than half of those podiums have been victories, including his maiden top-three finish on his Red Bull debut at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix.

“Bonkers that 56 of those 100 podiums have been wins… including his very first,” he wrote.

Is Verstappen going to join Mercedes?

With Verstappen delivering flawless performances on the race track, the big question is where his long-term future lies.

He’s under contract at Red Bull until the end of the 2028 season, but Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff wants him to replace Hamilton at Mercedes.

Verstappen knows that there will be another major regulation change in 2026 and will want to best position himself to continue his supremacy.

Speaking last week, Ferrari rival Leclerc suggested that Verstappen and Red Bull needed each other to be as successful as they currently are.
