‘I would say’: Jack Aitken names ‘great’ next step Ollie Bearman should consider after Saudi GP debut

BBC Sport pundit and former Formula 1 driver Jack Aitken has suggested that a move to Haas would be a ‘great thing’ for Oliver Bearman and the American outfit.

Oliver Bearman went from earning pole position in Formula 2 to scoring his first F1 points in the space of 48 hours in Saudi Arabia.

Speaking on The Chequered Flag Podcast, Jack Aitken shared his thoughts on the 18-year-old’s future.

Aitken says Bearman to Haas would be a ‘great thing’

Earning a seat in Formula 1 is becoming more and more challenging for young drivers.

The 2024 season saw no new drivers join the grid, with back-to-back Formula 2 champions waiting in the wings.

However, all it takes is a chance opportunity to prove that you’re good enough to be racing in F1.

The most recent experience was Nyck de Vries’s cameo for Williams at Monza in 2022 which saw him race for AlphaTauri the following year.

While that didn’t end brilliantly for the Dutchman, Oliver Bearman produced arguably an even better display in Saudi Arabia, scoring six points for Ferrari.

Jack Aitken now thinks that a move to Haas next season would be a great next step for Bearman.

He’s been linked with the seat in the past and Aitken has named which of their current drivers he could replace.

Bearman has bright future ahead of him in Formula 1

Speaking about Bearman’s next steps, Aitken said: “I mean it would line up quite nicely, there have been some rumours about Magnussen and the security of his seat, underperforming a little bit compared to Hulkenberg.

“Would they want some fresh blood, I would say that would be a great thing for that team.”

Haas are having a much more positive season than many expected and have moved up to sixth in the Constructors’ Championship thanks to Nico Hulkenberg’s 10-place finish.

However, bringing in Bearman as Aitken explains would be a great move for Haas and he could have a similar impact to George Russell when he started at Williams.

All eyes will be on how he performs in Formula 2 as the season rolls on.

His position in the Drivers’ Championship won’t fully represent his performances after missing out on the chance to convert a pole position in Saturday’s Feature Race.

That won’t bother Bearman at all after impressing on the biggest stage in Jeddah.
