John Cena gave us the first Oscars moment a celebrity has gone naked at the ceremony since 1974. The WWE wrestler presented best costume design award in the most fitting attire: his birthday suit.
Ceremony host Jimmy Kimmel introduced John Cena to the Oscars stage. Kimmel began by mentioning the fact that it had been 50 years since a streaker invaded the stage at the 46th Academy Awards.
John Cena’s naked Oscars moment
John Cena went naked at the Oscars – but he wasn’t completely stark. He was actually wearing a set of small knickers that covered his private parts, which we saw in a behind-the-scenes photo.
Jimmy Kimmel said to the audience, “Can you imagine if a nude man ran across the stage today? Wouldn’t that be crazy?” while behind him, Cena peeked out from behind the set dressing.
The pair then bickered over whether or not they were going to go through with “the streaker bit”, and voila, John Cena literally wears his birthday suit with the ‘best costume design’ card covering down there.
His best costume design speech
John starts with the opening that “costume designs are so important,” before saying, “Maybe the most important thing there is.” He then joked how he “can’t open the envelope” without revealing his bits.
The nominees were then played on-screen. In that time, he had a flash costume change, and reappeared to present the award. Out came the WWE wrestler wearing a long toga-like robe!
‘Greatest Oscars moment of all time’
When John went naked at the Oscars, fans dubbed the moment the “greatest Oscars” speech of all time. One viewer said, “Naked John Cena bit might be the greatest Oscar bit of all time.”
However, there’s some controversy around the naked performance. One called John an “attention seeker” while another wrote that it was “humiliating” for the wrestler and actor.
