N.J. man arrested following 12-hour standoff faces new weapons charge

A man charged last fall following a long standoff with Egg Harbor Township police was recently arrested for allegedly disobeying court orders to surrender guns sought in connection to the confrontation, authorities said.

Police arrested Joseph Dill last Wednesday on an outstanding warrant, police said Monday. He was arrested following the 12-hour standoff at his home in November 2023 that shut down a part of Tremont Avenue in the township.

Dill, an Egg Harbor Township resident, is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and violating the court order, police said. He was first charged in the case with burglary, criminal mischief and harassment.

Attorney information for Dill was not immediately available Monday.

The case spurred from Dill in late November allegedly disrupting his neighbor’s property in the 4000 block of Tremont Avenue. Police were called to the area in the early morning hours after the suspect allegedly broke his neighbor’s porch lights and attempted to break into the home by kicking in the front door.

The neighbor called police, telling authorities Dill was shooting off rounds from a gun in his yard across the street. When police arrived, Dill barricaded himself in his home, leading to the standoff that interrupted traffic and prompted officials at the Fernwood Avenue Middle School nearby to keep students inside the building as a precaution.

Dill was arrested after being persuaded to leave his home by negotiators.

Police on Monday said they obtained a search warrant for the missing guns, returning to the property for the firearms to find the weapons. Police did not say where on the property the guns were being stored.
