Report: What rival clubs thought about Leeds after speaking to them on transfers in January

Leeds United had a relatively quiet January transfer window earlier this year.

The Whites chose to bring in just one player across the whole of the month in Connor Roberts from Burnley, who joined on loan for the rest of the season to replace the outbound Luke Ayling and Djed Spence.

Heading into the window, Daniel Farke had also been keen to bring in another left-back, while there were also links to a couple of creative attackers such as Manuel Benson and David Brooks.

However, in the end, Roberts was the only one to materialise, with Leeds having done the majority of their business in the summer by bringing in nine new players to compensate the several that went the other way.

And according to the Athletic, there were two main reasons why Leeds opted against being overly active during the January window.

Leeds reason for lack of January activity revealed

It is said that clubs who spoke to Leeds were under the impression that there was not a great amount of available transfer funds, with PSR not allowing for further major investment after the summer.

Additionally, Farke also made it clear at the end of December that Leeds’ only priority in January had to be keeping their key players, which is what they managed to achieve.

Understandably, there were rumours regarding the likes of Crysencio Summerville and Willy Gnonto but nothing ever got close with Farke determined to keep everyone around for the promotion push.

Leeds instead managed to make money through the sale of Leo Hjelde, as well as loaning out a couple of players like Ian Poveda and Ayling.

With all that said, it will certainly be interesting to see what sort of funds are available in the summer, regardless of what division Leeds end up being in.
