Report: Everton to face battle to sign 18-year-old striker who's about to become a free agent

Everton are looking to land a soon-to-be free agent currently on the books of one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Per The Athletic, Kevin Thelwell is looking to unearth the next Jarrad Branthwaite, with the club targeting younger talent that can be developed.

A route that is supposedly being explored is the fee-agent market, and Everton reportedly have their eye on one of Arsenal’s younger prospects.

Everton eye Arsenal sensation Omari Benjamin

According to the Liverpool Echo, on March 4, the Toffees took Arsenal youngster Omari Benjamin on trial.

The Welsh youth international scored for Paul Tait’s under-21s during their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Premier League 2.

Benjamin has since returned to Hale End butis set to be released.

The Athletic now report that Everton’s interest remains, but other clubs could now battle for the striker’s signature.

“Omari Benjamin, soon to be released by Arsenal, was recently on trial with the under-21s, but other clubs are expected to compete with Everton for his signature,” they wrote.

Is this a good move for Everton?

Signing players released from rival clubs is undoubtedly an exciting route.

Brentford are the prime example of how it can be a profitable strategy. The Bees’ B team has been used to harbour players deemed surplus to requirements by the Premier League elite.

Myles Peart-Harris, currently on loan at Portsmouth, is a player Thomas Frank’s side picked up from Chelsea’s vast youth set-up.

It appears Thelwell is attempting to diversify Everton’s youth production, and given success at other top-flight clubs, it’s a promising avenue for the former Wolves chief to explore. He has previously spoken of his excitement over the signing of Youssef Chermiti.

As for Benjamin, the fact he’s already been on trial with the club is a positive. It could give the Toffees a helping hand if they try to land him upon his Arsenal release – one to keep an eye on over the coming months.
