‘I understand’: Journalist shares whether Anthony Gordon will be included in England’s latest squad

It has now been decided if Anthony Gordon’s impressive form for Newcastle United will be enough to see him included in the next England squad.

Gareth Southgate will announce his latest group of players this afternoon and it was initially feared that Gordon may miss out due to an injury he picked up on Monday, but it’s believed it’s not too serious.

As reported by Luke Edwards, Gordon is now expected to be included in the upcoming England squad ahead of their friendlies against Brazil and Belgium later this week.

Gordon finally gets England call up

Gordon has been knocking on Southgate’s door this season after a very impressive campaign for Newcastle, though he wasn’t included in any of the squads towards the end of 2023.

However, the winger looks to have managed to change the head coach’s mind after continuing to impress in a black and white shirt racking up nine goals and five assists in the Premier League this season.

His injury against Chelsea on Monday looked pretty serious as he came off in the first half having tried to play on, and even Eddie Howe had suggested it looked like a bad one, but recent reports have claimed that it’s better than first feared.

That is hugely positive news both for Newcastle and Gordon on a personal level who made it his goal at the beginning of the season to get into England’s first team after such a huge success in the summer with the Under-21s.

On social media, Edwards said: “I understand Anthony Gordon will be in the England squad named later today.”

Gordon absolutely deserves this

In what has been a very frustrating season for Newcastle fans despite the Champions league campaign, Gordon has remained the one constant in the team and he’s arguably been their most important player.

With the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling all out of form, it would have been absolutely ridiculous for Gordon to be left out of this England squad.

Hopefully for Newcastle he can now give a good account of himself in these upcoming friendlies where he could face teammate Bruno Guimaraes at Wembley, but ultimately come back with no new knocks.

They may yet argue that he’s not fit enough to be called up, but the rumours are that he could still feature against Manchester City this weekend in the FA Cup.
