Man City superstar Erling Haaland snubs Max Verstappen as he names his favourite Formula 1 driver

Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland has overlooked reigning world champion Max Verstappen in naming his favourite F1 driver.

Verstappen has won the last three titles and is the overwhelming favourite to clinch a fourth this year.

But City striker Haaland says he cheers on one of the Dutchman’s rivals instead.

The Norwegian has established himself as one of the best players in world football since joining the Premier League club from German outfit Borussia Dortmund in 2022.

He broke the league’s goalscoring record in his first season and helped fire City to the first treble by an English team in the 21st century.

The 23-year-old would finish runner-up behind Lionel Messi in the voting for the Ballon D’Or, the top individual prize in football.

Haaland also beat Verstappen to the BBC World Sports Star of the Year award for 2023.

Erling Haaland picks Lewis Hamilton as top F1 driver

When asked by beIN Sports to name his favourite driver on the grid, Haaland gave a one-word reply: “Hamilton.”

The Mercedes star is statistically the most successful racer in the sport’s history, with only Michael Schumacher able to match his tally of seven world titles.

He’s also won a record 103 races, and taken an unmatched 104 pole positions.

The Briton has been unable to contend for the title in the past few years as Red Bull have seized control and Mercedes have regressed.

Hamilton joining Ferrari for 2025

In February, it emerged that Hamilton would make one of the biggest driver moves the sport had ever seen by swapping Mercedes for Ferrari.

He’ll race alongside five-time Grand Prix winner Charles Leclerc at the Scuderia, with Carlos Sainz making way.

Before that, the 39-year-old will look to end his historic stint at Mercedes on a high.

It’s been a difficult start to the season for the man who finished third in the 2023 championship as he struggles to get to grips with the W15.

Liam Lawson thinks that Hamilton simply lacks confidence in the car underneath him at present.

Mercedes are investigating the possibility of ‘fundamental’ design issues on their car ahead of next weekend’s Australian Grand Prix.

Hamilton, who has finished seventh and ninth in the first two races, will aim to produce a better individual showing in Melbourne.
