Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami won the women's World Cup overall title and the giant slalom crystal globe on Sunday despite big rival Federica Brignone of Italy taking first place in the race in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

The last giant slalom of the season in Austria had given Gut-Behrami the chance of securing her first discipline and second World Cup title and she managed enough points by finishing 10th.

Brignone, the 2020 World Cup champion, won the race despite almost falling early on by 1.36 seconds from New Zealand's Alice Robinson, but it was not enough given the performance of 2016 champion Gut-Behrami.

The 32-year-old Gut-Behrami won four giant slaloms this season, one downhill and three super-gs.

American great Mikaela Shiffrin finished her season on Saturday by winning the last slalom of 2023-24.

The five-time World Cup champion led the standings before being injured in a fall in the Cortina downhill in January, which forced her to miss several races and skip the quicker events in Saalbach-Hinterglemm.

The women's World Cup finals conclude with a super-G on Friday and downhill on Saturday.

The men are also racing in their final slalom of the season on Sunday. Norway's Timon Haugan leads after the first run.
