42-year-old director is keen on replacing Dan Ashworth at Newcastle amid links to the club

Newcastle United have now been searching for a replacement for sporting director Dan Ashworth for over a month.

Ashworth announced that he would be leaving the club to take up a role at Man United under their new investors just last month, though the move has not yet been finalised with the director still on gardening leave.

Newcastle have since been linked with former Tottenham and Southampton man Paul Mitchell and a report from HITC now claims that he would be interested in taking up the role.

Newcastle hoping to secure Ashworth replacement soon

Newcastle have been below standard this season and there is just 10 games left to play in the Premier League having been knocked out of the FA Cup by Man City yesterday.

There’s still hope that they can qualify for Europe for next year with a bit of a push in this final run, but ultimately a lot of their performances, particularly after November, have just not been good enough.

That puts a lot of pressure on this upcoming summer transfer window to help transform the squad and make sure they can once again push for the Champions League next season.

The loss of Ashworth in February was a huge blow to those plans, so it is pivotal that they get this appointment spot on to head the search for to players as well as bringing other parts of the club together and leading negotiations.

Newcastle have their pick of top directors

While they would have ideally liked to have held onto Ashworth who was identified as the best in his position, Newcastle will now pretty much have their pick of the best directors.

Although they haven’t been able to flex their muscles financially in the transfer market just yet, Newcastle’s owners have an abundance of wealth ready to inject into the club if and when they can.

That’s an exciting prospect for anyone in the business and they’re sure to not be short of any suitors to fill in that sporting director role as was clear last week when Tiago Pinto shared his interest in joining Newcastle.

Whatever happens, Newcastle are set to be in safe hands regardless of who they hire as it will be someone with experience and who is knowledgeable in how to succeed in this role.
