‘Absolute hero’: Journalist shares the ‘fantastic’ thing Carlos Sainz did during the Saudi Arabia GP

The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix didn’t go to plan for Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, but he was spotted doing something ‘fantastic’ behind the scenes on race day.

The Spanish driver had to sit out of the race after having surgery to remove his appendix, handing Oliver Bearman his Formula 1 debut.

Speaking on the Inside The Piranha Club Podcast, journalist Ben Hunt shared what the 29-year-old was doing during the race.

Sainz spotted doing something ‘fantastic’ at Saudi Arabia GP

Formula 1 is currently scrambling around for on-track storylines as the dominance of Red Bull looks set to continue for the foreseeable future.

Max Verstappen is on course to match his own record for consecutive wins if he takes the chequered flag in Melbourne.

Sergio Perez doesn’t appear to be having as many issues as last season when it comes to finishing as runner-up to his teammate in the fastest car on the grid either.

So, when Oliver Bearman was thrust into Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari in Saudi Arabia at late notice, suddenly there was a fantastic new driver to concentrate on.

His 7 place finish was very impressive and has led to calls for him to be on the grid in 2025.

Sainz is another driver who is racing for his future after being let go by Ferrari for next season.

He’s likely to have plenty of offers on the table, especially when they see what he was doing behind the scenes in Jeddah.

Sainz set to be key player in 2025 F1 driver market

Speaking about the Spanish driver, Hunt said: “Can I just say about Carlos Sainz as well, absolute hero.

“Came into the paddock on Saturday, very gingerly, was clearly uncomfortable, had just come out of hospital having undergone the operation, was walking really slowly.

“He was there helping the team out and I really think that was a fantastic thing to do.

“There’s so many drivers in Formula 1 who wouldn’t do that and I’m struggling to think of anyone who would turn up to work who’s being ditched by Ferrari at the end of the year and yet he came in to help out.

“And I think that is fantastic, an absolute legend for doing so, well done him.”

Sainz is a fantastic team player and it’s no surprise that he was there helping Ferrari out in Saudi Arabia despite only just having surgery.

Ferrari are expected to make a late call on whether Sainz will race in Australia or if Bearman will get another chance.

It’s hard to imagine the Spaniard won’t be in the car given how important it is for him to prove himself ahead of the 2025 season.
