Bruno Guimaraes made a real mistake on Saturday night, it was so unnecessary - opinion

Bruno Guimaraes has rarely put a foot wrong since joining Newcastle United, but I think he made a mistake on Saturday night.

The 26-year-old was involved in Newcastle United’s FA Cup exit to Manchester City, with Eddie Howe’s side losing 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

It means that silverware is out of the question for Newcastle this season, as the wait for a trophy goes on. It also means that this season will definitely be worse than last year, as there is no way we are going to qualify for the Champions League.

Newcastle are struggling in the Premier League, and sit 10th with 10 games to go. But seventh is still within reach, which would provide European football for the second season in a row.

That would still have to be considered an achievement, even if some fans are massively disappointing by the regression shown this season. And Bruno Guimaraes‘ comments after the defeat to Man City certainly have not eased fans’ concerns.

What Bruno Guimaraes tweeted after Manchester City loss

Following Newcastle’s 2-0 loss to Man City, Bruno took to his social media channels.

He wrote on X: “Struggling to find words now! Disappointed to not go through in the FA Cup. We still have 10 games in the premier league to save our season. We count on our fans as always.”

Bruno’s message to Newcastle fans was a mistake

While it is great that Bruno is always honest with the fans in victory and defeat, his comments on Saturday night caused a bit of a storm. It led to immediate panic from the Toon Army, with many concerned that Bruno will now leave the club this summer if we do not qualify for Europe.

Then came suggestions that Bruno had been lot down, that he needed better players around him. The overreaction to a tweet was massive, at a time when the Newcastle fanbase is unclear what the future holds.

The owners want to take Newcastle United to the top, but that will take time under the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules. Eddie Howe believes he can get Newcastle to the top, but he is being questioned during what has been an incredibly challenging season.

It always was going to be challenging, but the obstacles have been even greater given our injury woes and the Sandro Tonali situation.

To qualify for the Champions League season was a major shock. It was certainly deserved, but it was not an indication that we are now a top four club. Obviously players like Bruno should be playing in the Champions League every year, but that was always going to be nigh on impossible for a few years after signing for the Magpies. In truth, he is lucky he has had one year in the Champions League in black and white.

If the Brazilian does decide to leave this summer, then that is fair enough. That is what his release clause is there for, and there is no denying his talent.

Fans are already worried about him going, and his tweet on Saturday night certainly did not ease the worries of the Newcastle United faithful. What he sent out was a mistake, even if it was sent with good intentions.
