First time candidate David Lunn was up against Conservative Richard Crumly and UKIP candidate Gary Johnson – both of whom have been on the council before.

Mr Lunn received 692 votes whilst Mr Crumly had 373 and Mr Johnson following with 95.

He will now represent the Thatcham North East ward.

“I am chuffed,” Mr Lunn told Newburytoday.

“I had a feeling things were going our way from knocking on people’s doors.

“The feedback from the public in the area was that they did not want the Conservatives in.”

Mr Lunn said he is keen to get stuck in, talk to people and help them solve their problems.

But the first item on his agenda is tackling a resident’s rat problem.

“I met a lady who has a bit of a rat problem down her road.

“When I knocked on her door, she was actually on the phone with the [district] council.

“One of the first things I would like to do is help her and try to get this resolved if I can.”

He will be joining his wife Jay Lunn (Lib Dem, Thatcham Central).

“I would like to thank my wife who has been supporting me.

“And I want to thank all the support I got from the Lib Dems, councillor Owen Jefferies and Arthur Wu who was sent from our HQ to help us out.”
