TV star devastated as inspiring older brother dies - 'An angel unaware'

Former Southern Charm star Thomas Ravenel is mourning the loss of his brother, William Ravenel, who passed away at the age of 65 this March. The reality star pens via social media how his sibling joins his late parents in “heaven” following his passing. Thomas was a Southern Charm cast member from seasons 1-5 and reappeared on the show as a guest in season 7.

Taking to social media, Bravo star Thomas shared how his older sibling sadly passed away on March 15, 2024. The Southern Charm star shared his brother’s obituary online and referred to him as an “angel.” Thomas wrote how his older brother by four years was the sibling he was closest to “in age and emotion.”

Thomas Ravenel’s brother dies

At the age of 65, Thomas’ brother, William Ravenel Summerville, sadly passed away on March 15, 2024.

The reality TV star’s sibling lived at the Coastal Center in Ladson at the time of his death, per his obituary.

While William is “joining his parents in heaven,” he is survived by: “Siblings Suzanne C Ravenel, Arthur Ravenel III (Heidi) Renee Ravenel Brockinton (Harvey), Eva Ravenel and Thomas J J Ravenel, his uncles, Edward Ravenel (Patty), James B Rodgers (Sue), John C Rodgers (Elizabeth), Sandy Bee (Mary Ann), aunt Ann Rodgers, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.”

Southern Charm star pays tribute

Taking to X (Twitter) following William’s death, Thomas wrote of his late brother: “My brother William was the best person I knew, completely guileless, an angel unaware…”

He added: “…Regardless of how we felt at any given moment, if any of his siblings was sad, he’d be sad alongside us. If we were happy and laughing he’d contribute to our laughter as well. He was all about making us feel special.”

In a separate post, he simply wrote: “RIP to my dear brother,” before sharing his obituary in another tweet.

William’s obituary reads: “He was a loving, playful, joyful gentleman throughout his entire life.”

William was a ‘change maker’

Per Thomas’ brother’s obituary, “William was born January 23, 1959, with Downs Syndrome.”

The tribute to his life continues to add: “He was a leading change maker for the developmentally disabled, inspiring his parents to start pre-schools, camps, and activities of all sorts which had been previously denied them. He even inspired the founding of the Coastal Center and The Protection and Advocacy Agency for people like him.”

Recalling more memories of his older brother, Thomas wrote on X: “I remember asking Dad if he could have any wish in the world what would it be. I’ll never forget his response. It was that William would have been born normal. But he was born special.

“He was my closest sibling in age and emotion. He was my roommate and playmate as a toddler. I loved him and I wanted everyone else to love him too. He was a beautiful part of life.”
