'Class act': Peter Crouch names who he thinks would be the 'ideal' manager to take over at Liverpool

Peter Crouch has been discussing who he’d like to see replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer.

The former Liverpool striker delivered his verdict on Xabi Alonso, who is widely viewed as the favourite to land the job.

Michael Edwards is back in Merseyside and the new chief executive of football has already been tipped to move for Alonso off the back of a hugely impressive campaign at Bayern Leverkusen.

Liverpool will face a battle to land their former midfielder though, with Alonso also attracting interest from Bayern Munich.

But Peter Crouch believes the 42-year-old is the ‘ideal’ candidate to take over from Jurgen Klopp.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday morning, Crouch shared his thoughts on Alonso taking over from Klopp.

“I played with Xabi,” he said. “Absolute class act as a man. Even at that age he was a link between the manager and the players. He was kind of like the leader of the Spanish contingent who Rafa [Benitez] brought in and everyone loved him as a person.

“Absolute class act. You could see him going on to be a manager, he was always asking questions. He wanted to know about English culture when he played here.

“He has now played in Germany and Spain, so he has got all this in his armoury and he has done such an amazing job at Leverkusen so I think he would be absolutely ideal.

“It’s just whether it comes a little bit too early, as it is still very early in his managerial career.”

When did Alonso join Bayer Leverkusen?

Alonso took over at Leverkusen back in October 2022 after a spell as Real Sociedad B’s manager.

In the space of just 17 months, the Spaniard has transformed the German outfit into the best side in the Bundesliga.

Leverkusen remain unbeaten in all competitions this season and currently lead the way in the German top flight.

It’s no real surprise to see him attracting admiring glances from his former club Liverpool as they prepare for life without Klopp.

Despite his lack of experience as a manager, he’s undoubtedly the most exciting managerial prospect in Europe at the moment.
