Report: Alexander Isak is now about to be trialled in a new position

Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak could be braced for a new role during the international break.

While Eddie Howe is working with the majority of the Newcastle United squad in Dubai, a lot of his players are away representing their countries.

Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes are set to go head-to-head on Saturday when England face Brazil, while Alexander Isak and Emil Krafth are both in the Sweden squad.

They are working with a new manager, as former Newcastle United striker Jon Dahl Tomasson begins his new role as Sweden boss. His side are preparing for friendlies against Portugal and Albania, and they could see Isak trialled in a new position.

Alexander Isak set for new position with Sweden

That is according to Swedish outlet Fotbollskanalen. They report that Tomasson has been using a 4-2-3-1 formation during training, which would hint that Isak is going to be the lone striker for his country.

However, that is not the case. Fotbollskanalen state that Sporting star Viktor Gyokeres has been the main forward in training, with Isak providing a supporting role. They state that Dejan Kulusevski, Isak and Anthony Elanga have been behind Gyokeres, as Tomasson aims to find a way to get the most out of his attacking talent.

It is something Isak has rarely done for Newcastle United

It is an interesting role for Isak, and one we have barely seen him operate in during his Newcastle United career. The 24-year-old has predominantly played as a striker or a left winger, and it was on the wing where he produced that dazzling solo run against Everton last season.

There has been the odd occasion when Isak has been used as an attacking midfielder or supporting striker. We saw it in the Carabao Cup final last season, with Isak coming on at half time to support Callum Wilson through the middle.

Isak has only ever been a ‘number 10’ for Newcastle when he has been on the pitch with Wilson, which has been rare. The duo dovetailed brilliantly last season, while this campaign has rarely seen them both be fit at the same time.

But if Isak thrives in this new role for Sweden then it could offer Eddie Howe some food for though – especially as he ponders signing a new striker when the summer transfer window opens.
