Report: Man City actually tried to sign £166m superstar in 2017, Pep Guardiola spoke to him personally

While Kylian Mbappe seems to have been linked with almost every top European club, a revelation has emerged about his potential move to Manchester City in 2017.

In the 2016/2017 season, Mbappe had taken football by storm, leading AS Monaco to the Champions League semi-finals, while perhaps putting in the breakout performance of his career against City.

While City beat the French side 5-3 at the Etihad Stadium in the first leg of the last 16, the Frenchman got on the scoresheet with an excellent finish.

In the second leg in France, Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for the Ligue 1 side in a contest that they won 3-1, as City lost the tie on away goals as the aggregate score ended 6-6.

At the time, Manchester City were ridiculed by many for losing to a Monaco side who were viewed as clear underdogs.

In fairness, City perhaps should have beaten the French giants but many failed to appreciate just how many unearthed gems they had at their disposal, such as Bernardo Silva, Fabinho and Mbappe himself.

The report has claimed that the Sky Blues tried to sign the electric forward on three separate occasions.

However, in the summer of 2017, Mbappe ended up signing for Paris Saint-Germain on loan, in a deal that included an obligation to buy him for £166 million (The Times).

Of course, PSG forked out a whopping sum to sign the teenage sensation at the time, who has since become one of the best players in the world.

Having watched Kylian Mbappe wreak havoc upon Manchester City, one is not surprised why Pep Guardiola went as far as to speak to him personally to persuade him to become a Manchester City player in 2017.

The idea of Guardiola developing Mbappe for seven years would perhaps even have meant that he developed into an even better player than he is currently.

After all, the Catalan boss’ insistence on his forwards being relentless pressers would have perhaps improved Kylian Mbappe defensively; an aspect of his game that is possibly his weakest.
