Edson Alvarez has been a key man for West Ham United this season, and he’s currently away on international duty with Mexico.
West Ham star Edson Alvarez faces a CONCACAF semi-final clash with Panama and a potential final against either the USA or Jamaica.
The 26-year-old faces a mammoth 10,000 mile round trip to the United States of America and back over the next five or six days, so that’s hardly ideal for us.
However, he is suspended for three of our next four games both in the Premier League and the Europa League, so the travelling shouldn’t really affect him.
David Moyes, Tim Steidten and the club’s owners have to be praised for bringing Alvarez to the London Stadium.
He has more than made up for Declan Rice’s exit, and is absolutely crucial to everything good that we do as a team.
However, it seems like Alvarez has a chip on his shoulder right now, and he made that very clear when speaking to reporters out in Dallas…
West Ham star Edson Alvarez criticises manager
The former Ajax man is currently out in Dallas with the Mexico national team preparing for their upcoming fixture with Panama.
He seems to be extremely happy under current Mexico manager Jaime Lozano, but the same cannot be said for his former gaffer Geraldo Martino.
Alvarez highlighted how he felt disrespected by the Argentinian out in Qatar 16 months ago, as quoted by AS:
“At the World Cup, I didn’t feel like an undisputed starter, but I felt like I had a good chance of playing. In the match against Poland the relationship was the same as always. The game against Argentina arrives and it’s like I was a stranger, as if I had never seen myself play, I didn’t start and I didn’t play.”
However, Alvarez went on to say that he was grateful to play under Martino:
“I’m grateful, at some point I had a great relationship with him. A relationship in which he would come with me, we chatted, we shared ideas. He’s a person who really likes to talk about football and was very interested in the Ajax system, we shared many things.”
Those comments will have caused quite the stir in his homeland, and I presume that the majority of Mexican fans will be backing the Hammers midfielder.
Back in 2022 at the World Cup out in Qatar, Alvarez started Mexico’s opener against Poland, before being dropped to the bench for the clash with Argentina.
To be fair, Alvarez is well within his rights to question why he wasn’t on Martino’s start sheet for that game against the eventual World Cup winners.
He is one of Mexico’s best players, if not the best.
Thankfully Edson Alvarez knows just how important he is at West Ham, and we’re really going to miss him for our next two Premier League games and the Europa League clash with Bayer Leverkusen.
