Report: Julen Lopetegui's former club have offered £27k-a-week Wolves target a three-year contract

Wolves are facing competition for midfielder target Alex Berenguer, who is said to be in the crosshairs of La Liga side Sevilla.

Gary O’Neil will be hoping for a productive summer, after having two difficult transfer windows so far during his time as manager.

O’Neil, of course, came in just days before the start of the current season, and only had a very short amount of time to get players in last summer, and as everyone knows, Wanderers were very restricted with their spending.

It was a similar story in January, with Wanderers only able to bring in Noha Lemina from Paris Saint-Germain in the end.

While Wolves are set to be able to spend more freely in the summer, the club will still be on the lookout for bargains and Alex Berenguer is someone who may be of interest – but Wanderers may not get a straight run at the forward…

It was reported earlier this week that Berenguer, who plays for Athletic Bilbao, is being monitored by Wolves ahead of the summer.

Bilbao have been hoping to extend his contract, but there has been no movement on that and at the moment, he stands to become a free agent this summer.

Inevitably, the situation means that Wolves are not the only club in the picture.

It has been reported by Vamos Mi Sevilla FC that the 28-year-old already has a three-year (plus one) contract offer on the table from Sevilla, who were previously managed by Julen Lopetegui, of course. It is also stated that the player has been offered a ‘small’ signing-on bonus.

Wolves need a durable winger

So Sevilla have apparently presented a contract offer, and we will now wait to see if Wolves decide to make one of their own. Of course, we are still only in March and there may not be movement on this until the summer.

But certainly, Wolves do need to be signing another winger this summer because O’Neil needs better depth.

We have seen Neto and Hwang once again succumb to injuries this term, and obviously, Neto is very possibly going to leave for big money, which would create even more of a need for a new winger.

Berenguer could be a decent addition on a free transfer.

Appealingly, the 28-year-old, who reportedly earns around £27,000-a-week, has had a very good injury record throughout his career, missing only four games for current club Bilbao through injury since he signed for them in October 2020. For Torino, he also only missed four in three seasons, and for Osasuna – his first club – he missed seven across three seasons.
