'It's fun': £85m player admits he's enjoying the rumours after claims Newcastle want to sign him

Newcastle United have been keeping a close eye on a talented striker who has been putting in some incredible performances this season.

It’s understood that Newcastle will be in the market for a new forward this summer and they have already sent scouts to watch over some top stars across Europe.

One of those who they have been watching is Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres who spoke to Fotballskanalen about the rumours surrounding his future.

Gyokeres is happy that Newcastle want to sign him

The Swedish striker only joined Sporting last summer when he made the leap from Coventry where he was a fan favourite and had established himself as one of the best players in the Championship.

Now, he has recorded 36 goals across all competitions this season which has attracted the attention of a number of top clubs around Europe, including Newcastle.

Newcastle are joined by Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea in their bid to sign the striker, though he’s sure to not come cheap with an £86m release clause in his contract.

When asked about the transfer links, Gyokeres, of course, refused to confirm or deny who was interested, but admitted that he as enjoying being in such high demand.

On the rumours, Gyokeres said: “I don’t think much about the future. I want to win the league and the cup with Sporting. That’s what I put all my energy into in the club team. But it’s fun to get appreciation.

“It’s a sign that I’ve performed well. But it’s not something I take too seriously, since it’s just speculation. But, of course, it’s fun.

“We’ll see this summer. It’s not something I know about, what will happen. I enjoy Sporting extremely well and feel no stress about the summer coming quickly. (My 100 million euro clause) is a lot of money. But it’s not something that affects me.”

Newcastle could have two elite Swedish strikers next year

When fit, Alexander Isak has already proved that he is one of the most lethal strikers around Europe and his technical ability is up there with the best of them.

Since arriving on Tyneside, Isak has largely been supported by Callum Wilson, but he may have played his final game for Newcastle as the striker could be moved on this summer with his contract expiring.

Gyokeres would be a costly but hugely talented replacement for Wilson and would unite the international teammates to form one of the most lethal attacks in the Premier League.

Given Eddie Howe likes to play with just one striker at Newcastle, it would be difficult to balance the playing time of both attackers, but it’s certainly an exciting prospect to think about as a fan.
