Sir Alex Ferguson takes swipe at elite European team as he aligns himself with ‘all the neutral fans’ in one country

Former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has dropped a not-so-subtle criticism of one elite European club after admitting a change he would like to see.

Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out of Old Trafford in 2013 after the Red Devils lifted their last Premier League title under the legendary Scotsman’s reign.

Manchester United have struggled in the aftermath of Ferguson’s retirement, with the Premier League club going over a decade without a league title.

The Red Devils have finished second on two separate occasions in the league since 2013, but United still have a lot of work to do before challenging for a title again.

Despite his retirement from football management, Ferguson has remained an ever-present figure at Old Trafford and continued to support United during matches.

The 82-year-old iconic Scot, who is considered one of the best managers of all time, had his fair share of legendary rivalries while he was in the Old Trafford dugout.

Ferguson shared a famous rivalry with legendary former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, as well as with ex-United manager Jose Mourinho when he was at Chelsea.

The former United and Aberdeen head coach also had a well-known rivalry with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola when the Spaniard was at Barcelona.

Man Utd legend Ferguson aims dig at European team

Sir Alex Ferguson sat down for an interview with Eintracht Frankfurt’s media team and received a lifelong membership to the German club.

The Manchester United legend played against Eintracht Frankfurt when he was a Rangers player and came up against the team when he was manager of Aberdeen.

However, Ferguson never came up against Frankfurt when he was manager of United, despite witnessing the club’s “most successful time” early in his career.

The former United boss took a cheeky swipe at Bayern Munich during his conversation about Frankfurt, saying he wants to see another team win the league.

“Frankfurt’s most successful time was during my career at Aberdeen in the ‘70s and ‘80s, when they won the UEFA Cup in 1980,” Ferguson said.

“Recently, they beat Barcelona, right? I saw that. I always hope to see the underdog win.

“Bayern fans may not agree with that, but like all the neutral fans in Germany, I really hope to see someone else win the league again.”

Ferguson’s criticism of Bayern is fair

Ferguson is all too familiar with Bayern Munich after his iconic treble-winning United side beat the club in a famous 2-1 win in the Champions League final in 1999.

Bayern have maintained a stranglehold over the German top-flight league in recent times, having won their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title last season.

However, the Bavarians could well miss out on a 12th successive title this season, with Bayer Leverkusen leading the race for the Bundesliga crown.

Despite signing Harry Kane last summer, Bayern have played second fiddle to Bayer Leverkusen and are 10 points behind the German side in the title race.

Leverkusen have impressed in the current season under manager Xabi Alonso, who has been linked as a replacement for outgoing Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

Bayern, on the other hand, have struggled under Thomas Tuchel this season and the former Chelsea boss will leave the defending German champions this summer.
