'Odd one': Gary Neville thinks it's strange Erik ten Hag hasn't played 21-year-old more at Man United recently

Ian Wright and Gary Neville have both expressed a bit of surprise concerning Amad Diallo after the Manchester United youngster proved to be the hero in their dramatic FA Cup tie with Liverpool last weekend.

Amad Diallo had a crazy couple of minutes against the Reds – certainly benefitting of the remarkable game – with the 21-year-old scoring the extra-time winner before being sent off for a second yellow card. Amad had removed his shirt after beating Caoimhin Kelleher and sending the ground into a frenzy.

Some will wondering if that win proves to be a turning point for Erik ten Hag. But perhaps it could also prove to be a big moment in Amad’s Manchester United career.

Of course, the Ivory Coast international arrived for a substantial fee which could rise to £37 million. And so far, he is yet to live up to expectations.

Unfortunately, Amad has missed a large part of this campaign due to injury. But he returned to the fold just before the turn of the year, coming on in the defeat to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in December.

Gary Neville shares what he finds odd about Amad Diallo after Manchester United heroics

Amad has been in the last seven match day squads in the Premier League, but only featured once. Meanwhile, Omari Forson got the chance to make his full debut in the recent loss to Fulham.

So following his dramatic goal against Liverpool, both Ian Wright and Gary Neville have suggested on Stick to Football that Amad should have surely played more in recent weeks.

“Do you know what I was very surprised with. Remember when they played Forson in that game a couple of weeks ago, and they played Forson but didn’t start him but then he came on. I thought with his experience of Sunderland and Rangers before, I thought they would have started him,” Wright said.

“Over the last month or so it’s been a bit of an odd one that he wasn’t given a chance,” Neville added.

Winning goal sees youngster secure place in Old Trafford folklore

Clearly, ten Hag is not yet convinced that Amad is ready for a run in the team. But obviously, there is a very talented player in there.

He was so exciting during his time on loan at Sunderland, scoring 13 goals in the Championship last season.

Of course, it was never going to be easy to carry that form back with him to Manchester United, particularly when he spent several months on the sidelines.

But many fans live for those split-second moments when it feels like their team is all that matters in the world. And Amad definitely gave some Manchester United supporters that feeling at the weekend.

Perhaps it should be no surprise therefore, if he gets a few more opportunities in the weeks to come.
