'It's madness': Gary Neville stunned by something Nottingham Forest have done amid points deduction

Gary Neville has criticised Nottingham Forest after they were deducted four points earlier in the week for a financial fair play breach. The Sky Sports pundit has been left baffled by something the club have done since winning promotion.

Forest’s financial situation came to a head this week when they were finally given their punishment over their charge. The four-point subtraction has seen the Reds drop into the relegation zone, a point adrift of safety.

The Reds must now get focused on winning enough points between now and the end of the season to remain in the Premier League. Relegation doesn’t bear thinking about – but it will now be concerning Forest after their points deduction.

Neville has been speaking this week on the situation at Forest. From the outside looking in he’s been left pretty perplexed by one aspect of the club’s strategy since winning promotion.

What Gary Neville said about Nottingham Forest points deduction

Well, this has proved a hot topic of discussion for all of the pundits this week. Now, Neville has delivered his verdict on Forest and he’s suggested that perhaps he saw this situation coming.

Roy Keane believes Forest will still stay up this season. He was on the same Stick to Football podcast as Neville when talk turned towards the news that broke from the City Ground this week.

The former Manchester United and England star has mentioned the club’s recruitment as the decisive factor in the points deduction – and he can’t believe how active the club has been.

He told the Stick to Football podcast: “It was 20 odd, wasn’t it? In one summer. I know they had 10 players leave the previous season. But if it doesn’t look right, it’s usually not right. It’s madness what Forest were doing.”

Forest must change recruitment strategy after financial fair play sanction

Neville does have a bit of a point about Forest. From the outside looking in it must have looked like carnage, particularly last season, although the fact the Reds stayed up kind of mind it worthwhile.

If Forest can survive again this season, the four points will pale into insignificance and all will be forgotten. However, it must give the club a kick up the backside when it comes to recruitment.

Forest have overspent on mediocre players for far too long. If the dream is to really and truly become a club like Brighton then the Reds have to learn lessons from this.

Becoming a more sustainable club on the transfer front has to be a must for the future. Signing young players with potential resale has to be the remit as opposed to landing high-earning stars at the end of their careers.

Neville does have a good point about Forest here. The chaos following promotion was somewhat unnecessary and although the club needed to sign a host of players, 23 in one summer was just silly.
