Report: Chelsea will look again at signing £64m player this summer, a move is more likely than last year

Chelsea’s plan this summer is to recruit a new top-class goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge.

That is according to fresh speculation.

The Blues currently own Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic as their two senior options in goal, but there’s been questions marks about both throughout the course of the season. In fact, journalist Simon Phillips claimed via Substack last month that Chelsea have concerns about both Sanchez and Petrovic when it comes to their ball-playing ability.

Now, there’s talk that Chelsea could look to raid Portuguese giants Porto for Diogo Costa.

Costa, who’s aged 24, is the first-choice goalkeeper for both Porto and the Portugal national side.

The 6ft 1in gloveman is back on the Blues radar after previous links.

SportsLens claims that there’s a good chance Chelsea will go out and sign another shot-stopper in the upcoming summer transfer window.

It is understood that the Blues have studied Costa for quite a long time.

The report says that Chelsea were linked with a £64 million swoop for the Porto gloveman last summer and he’s on their shortlist again this year.

In addition, it is now felt ‘more likely’ that Costa could move this summer.

SportsLens has also named Arsenal’s 25-year-old keeper Aaron Ramsdale as another name on Chelsea’s list.

Diogo Costa an upgrade for Chelsea

From what we’ve seen of Porto’s goalkeeper, we think his signing would represent an upgrade on both Sanchez and Petrovic.

The 24-year-old is a definition of a modern keeper with the way he plays with the ball at his feet. In particular, he’s got a great passing range and can really arrow the ball to his full-backs with precision and pace.

The Chelsea Chronicle argued earlier this month why the Blues should sign Costa after an impressive Champions League display against Arsenal. Perhaps the club’s recruitment team have been listening to us!

If Mauricio Pochettino’s side want to become great, we do think they may need to make an improvement in-between the sticks. Our gut says Costa will bring a much better presence and composure.
