‘He deserved to win the Ballon d’Or’: Gabriel Martinelli says £13m Arsenal player was the best in the world

Arsenal have so many talented players on their books right now.

The likes of Bukayo Saka, William Saliba and Martin Odegaard are all very much in that world-class bracket.

However, despite the incredible talent on show at the Emirates right now, there’s only one player at the club who has ever been within touching distance of the Ballon d’Or.

Indeed, Jorginho finished third in the Ballon d’Or rankings back in 2021 after winning the Euros with Italy and the Champions League with Chelsea, and many believe that the midfielder should’ve won that year.

Speaking on Arsenal’s YouTube channel, Gabriel Martinelli has been discussing Jorginho when re-dubbing some commentary from the Arsenal vs Liverpool game a few weeks ago, and he claims that he thinks the Italian deserved the Ballon d’Or a while ago.

Jorginho should’ve won the Ballon d’Or

Martinelli shared his view on the £13m man.

“This here is one of Jorginho’s strengths, I can’t even find the words to describe it. I think he deserved to win the Ballon d’Or a while ago,” Martinelli said.

Should Jorginho have won the Ballon d’Or?

We really like Jorginho as a player, don’t get us wrong, but we have to dispute whether or not he should be a Ballon d’Or winner.

This is the biggest individual prize in world football, it should be reserved for the best of the best, and, let’s face it, Jorginho isn’t that player.

He wasn’t the best player for Chelsea during that Champions League run and he wasn’t the best player for Italy in their Euros win. In fact, if it weren’t for some good luck, his missed penalty in the shootout would’ve cost his country the tournament.

The Ballon d’Or is about a lot more than who has won the most trophies in any given year, and, in our view, Jorginho probably shouldn’t have won the award.
