Now worth £85m: Man City made a big mistake by letting ‘magnificent’ player leave in 2023 - opinion

One player Manchester City got rid of has seen his market value skyrocket in recent months.

The previous summer transfer window saw numerous players make moves in and out of the Manchester club after they won the Treble.

One of the players who waved goodbye to the Etihad last summer has since seen his market value shoot up as a result of his impressive performances with his new side, thus raising the question of whether or not the Citizens made a mistake in letting him go.

Did City make a mistake selling Cole Palmer?

After working his way through the youth ranks at City, Palmer made 41 senior appearances for Pep Guardiola’s side across all competitions, scoring six goals and supplying two assists.

The winger was then sold to Chelsea back in September for a fee of over £42m and has since gone on to shine for the west London club.

Specifically, with 34 appearances under his belt, the 21-year-old, who has been called “magnificent” by Alan Shearer, has found the net 14 times and delivered 12 assists.

Across his 23 Premier League appearances in a Chelsea shirt, Palmer has racked up more shot-creating actions (89) and goal-creating actions (14) than any other player at the club.

His performances have earned the Englishman an overall season rating of 7.17/10 from WhoScored, making him the highest-rated player at Chelsea.

In terms of his market value, the CIES Observatory say Palmer is currently valued at €100m (£85m), putting him alongside Rodri and Jeremy Doku among several other players across Europe.

In fact, only 10 other players have a higher valuation than the former City academy graduate.

Taking all of that into account, it’s clear that the winger has flourished since making his move away from the club that gave him his first taste of senior football.

Therefore, we feel that perhaps Guardiola should have given Palmer the chance to play regularly at City and see if he could have delivered the sort of performances he has been doing at Chelsea.
