'Have I made a mistake?': £10m player suggests he initially questioned joining Tottenham

One Tottenham player has now suggested he initially questioned whether joining Spurs was the correct decision.

The comments were made during an exclusive interview with ESPN.

So, which Tottenham player initially doubted their move to north London? Let’s take a look…

Ben Davies initially questioned Tottenham move

Well, it was Ben Davies who found himself asking questions after sealing a £10m switch to Spurs from Swansea back in July 2014.

The Welshman had just enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with the Swans, stepping up in 2012 after Neil Taylor suffered a significant injury – dislocating his ankle in three places.

However, Davies initially struggled at Tottenham, which left him doubtful.

The Wales international said: “It was intense. The first few times I went in and I didn’t start the first few games, I’d just moved from Swansea where I was playing every game so I was a bit like, oh have I made a mistake? Should I have made this jump?

“Swansea then started playing unbelievable football, kicked on and I was thinking if I had stayed another year then maybe I could have done this, but we had to be patient, I was working with (Mauricio) Pochettino who was a young, exciting, up and coming manager, and I think during that first season most of that team was changing.

“We started to bring some younger guys in. It wasn’t straight forward for me because I didn’t play as much as I wanted to, but I still managed to play 28 or 29 games which isn’t too bad at 21 at Tottenham Hotspur, and I haven’t really looked back. It’s been home for the last ten years now.”

30-year-old is something of a cult hero

Davies may not be everybody’s favourite player as he shares a dressing room with the immensely popular Heung-min Son, although he deserves respect for what has been a very solid career at Spurs.

The 30-year-old has amassed 329 appearances for Tottenham, scoring nine goals and providing 23 assists, while also playing a part as the north Londoners reached the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League final.

Furthermore, Davies has provided cover at both centre-back and left-back in impressive fashion, offering versatility along with reliability.

In fact, Brennan Johnson believes he has never seen his fellow countryman have a bad game.

With just over 12 months remaining on his contract, it will be interesting to see whether Tottenham offer Davies a new deal – he certainly deserves one.
