Russell Crowe is an actor I’ve always been fond of, seeing him in movies like Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, and LA Confidential as a teen. When theaters reopened during the COVID-19 pandemic and I went to go see Unhinged after a long absence from the big-screen experience, I thought ‘Russell, thanks for saving the movies.’ I most recently saw him in the supernatural horror The Pope’s Exorcist, which illustrated you can never quite know what to expect from him. A mystery crime-thriller, on the other hand, is less something I’d expect than something I’d desperately want from him, and Sleeping Dogs is that.

Sleeping Dogs movie now in theaters
Opening exclusively in theaters on Friday, March 22nd 2024, Sleeping Dogs is the directorial feature debut of Adam Cooper, based on E.O. Chirovici’s 2017 novel The Book Of Mirrors.
The movie stars Russell as Roy Freeman, a now-retired homicide detective who is currently working through treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, grappling with failing memory and other effects of the neurodegenerative disease that majorly disrupts the brain.
Although deeply affected by his condition, he’s nevertheless pulled back into his career when a tip from an elusive stranger compels him to reopen an old murder case, in which the victim was a college professor.

Under the circumstances, more obstacles are in his way than ever before, but with new information, can he finally crack the case and retire on a wave of success?
Russell turns in a solid performance as the struggling but determined detective, and the writer-director constructs a curious mystery that will leave you guessing until the final act.
