Cristian Romero says player Mikel Arteta sold at Arsenal has now become 'the best in the world'

Tottenham Hotspur vice-captain Cristian Romero believes a player who Arsenal sold has become ‘the best in the world’ right now.

The Argentine is a World Cup winner. He is a fan favourite at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as well, and he knows a good player when he sees one.

Romero played for Argentina in their friendly against El Salvador late on Friday. He scored the opener and helped his side pick up a comfortable 3-0 win.

The Tottenham man was delighted after the victory and took to Instagram to celebrate. That’s where he heaped praise on an Arsenal old boy.

Cristian Romero says former Arsenal player is ‘the best in the world’ now

A number of players whom Arsenal have sold in the past have gone on to achieve incredible things.

The likes of Robin van Persie, Samir Nasri, and Cesc Fabregas all left the Gunners, and they lifted big trophies elsewhere.

One player who actually would’ve stayed if Arsenal wanted him was Emiliano Martinez.

The Argentina international helped the Gunners win the FA Cup and Community Shield with a few brilliant performances in 2020, and he was a fan favourite at the time.

However, after Mikel Arteta picked Bernd Leno over Martinez, the South American went and joined Aston Villa for £17 million (BBC).

Since then, Martinez has won the Copa America and the World Cup with Argentina and is regarded as an unbelievable goalkeeper.

Cristian Romero went a step further and called him ‘the best in the world’ on his Instagram Story following the win over El Salvador on Friday night.

Emi Martinez’s transfer value compared to Ramsdale and Raya

Emi Martinez is often lauded for being one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, if not the world.

The 31-year-old has done a remarkable job for club and country over the years, and some people still feel Arsenal were wrong to sell him.

However, according to the CIES Football Observatory. Martinez’s transfer value today is just over £17 million, which is exactly the fee Arsenal sold him for.

On the other hand, Arsenal’s two goalkeepers – Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya – are worth significantly more than Martinez.

The Englishman is the joint-most valuable goalkeeper in the world, with a transfer value of £51.7 million. David Raya’s value is said to be £34.5 million.

So, it has to be said that things have worked out for Arsenal, and we’re sure they have no regrets about their decision to sell Martinez.
