'For sure': Joan Laporta shares what he now thinks will happen with Joao Cancelo this summer

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has outlined what he expects to happen with Joao Cancelo in the summer transfer window.

It’s easy to forget that Joao Cancelo is still a Manchester City player given he hasn’t played for Pep Guardiola’s side for approaching 18 months.

The versatile full-back was once one of City’s most important players but fell out with the manager last season.

Cancelo joined Bayern Munich on loan in January, consequently missing out on the treble triumph.

The German giants opted against signing the Portuguese permanently which saw him return to Manchester for pre-season.

It looked as though there might even be a way back into the side for Cancelo when he played in some friendlies but it proved not to be the case.

Eventually, he joined Barcelona on loan for the season and now Joan Laporta has shared what he expects to happen next.

What will happen with Joao Cancelo in the summer?

Laporta has revealed he expects Cancelo to return to Barcelona for next season in an extension of his current loan.

He told MD, via Fabrizio Romano: “I think both Joao Cancelo and Joao Félix will continue at Barça next season.”

“I hope Atletico won’t create any issue. I don’t think Man City will put any limit to that”.

“For sure it will be an extension of loans with a fixed price.”

Ambitious from Barcelona

Cancelo may never play for City in a competitive fixture again but he is still their player and is contracted for another three years.

Barcelona might want him on loan but if City receive a reasonable offer from another club to sign him permanently they would surely be obliged to take it.

Cancelo has enjoyed a strong season at Camp Nou, scoring four goals and creating another four, so could generate some interest once the window opens.

It would certainly suit City better if they could recoup a decent transfer fee rather than just letting him leave on loan again.
