It’s always a pleasure to see the Liverpool legends team in action over the March international break.

Over the years we’ve seen some truly iconic players head out for games at Anfield, and today was no different.

There were a number of top players out on display, with thousands and thousands of Liverpool appearances between them and plenty of trophies to boot.

But without question, the biggest draw was the return of Fernando Torres. With Steven Gerrard also making his regular appearance, one of the Reds’ most productive partnerships of the 21st century was back in action. Beautiful.

Fernando Torres makes Anfield return

In the build-up to the game, Torres was looking just as sharp as ever. Having been out on the pitches at the AXA Training Centre last night, the 40-year-old pinged in some tremendous finishes.

No doubt impressed by what he’d seen, manager Sven Goran Eriksson picked Torres to start in his XI against Ajax, with Gerrard in there, too.

And with the two back in tandem for the first time in nine years – and 13 in a Liverpool shirt – there was a heart-warming sight for Reds fans before the game.

As seen on Liverpool’s official X page, Torres and Gerrard were pictured sat in the Anfield changing room just before the game. With their shirts adorned with numbers 9 and 8 respectively, it was a sight to warm the cockles.

What’s going on in the legends game

Despite having two genuinely world-class former players to call on, it didn’t start well for Liverpool at Anfield today. One-nil down in under two minutes, it was not the return that Torres had hoped for.

Nevertheless, Liverpool improved a little as the half wore on, El Nino almost getting on the scoresheet when well positioned but just fluffing his lines.

With Ryan Babel and Maxi Rodriguez looking lively on the wings, the Anfield crowd will be hoping to see a classic Gerrard to Torres link-up as the afternoon wears on.

Still, whatever happens, it’s all for a good cause and it’s just great to see these two back together again.
