'He got it all wrong': Manchester United player criticised after 'real misjudgement' in international clash

Matthew Upson was critical of Harry Maguire during England’s loss to Brazil on Saturday, suggesting that the Manchester United star got it all wrong in one moment at Wembley.

England fans hoping to be entertained in arguably their marquee game before Euro 2024 were left hugely underwhelmed. Endrick scored the only goal as Brazil overcame Gareth Southgate’s side.

The Three Lions were missing some key men. But it would be no surprise to see many of those same names who started on Saturday lining up in their opening game this summer.

And Harry Maguire is surely one of those in line to start against Serbia in mid-June. The 31-year-old started alongside John Stones against Selecao.

Brazil’s only goal actually came after Maguire had been replaced by Lewis Dunk midway through the second-half. But the visitors will feel that they should have gone in front in the first-half – after a mistake from Maguire.

The defender underhit a ball back to Jordan Pickford under little pressure. And that allowed Raphinha to get a strike at goal. However, the former Leeds United winger could only put the ball past the post.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live, Upson suggested that Maguire was incredibly fortunate.

“A real misjudgement from Harry Maguire. He got it all wrong, no purpose with the pass and Raphinha should do better – a real gift from Maguire,” he said.

Manchester United defender will have plenty of doubters to try and silence this summer

Maguire has come in for a lot of criticism since his move to Old Trafford. Obviously, a lot of it has gone completely over the top and been unacceptable.

But it is also fair to say that he has not always justified the faith of his managers. Roy Keane noted earlier this year that having Maguire in the team forces the Manchester United players to think twice about pushing up.

He has often stepped up in an England shirt. And it does appear that Gareth Southgate does not have the options to confidently leave him out.

England fans will be hoping that lucky escape acts as something of a wake-up call ahead of the summer.
