'Saddest time': Manager says being in charge of Tottenham made him the 'unhappiest' he's ever been as a coach

Everyone knows the Tottenham job has become a bit of a poisoned chalice in recent years.

Tottenham have had some amazing managers – on paper – in the last few seasons. The likes of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho are headline grabbing names who in the end, failed to bring success.

Mauricio Pochettino came before them and had an element of success, while the likes of Nuno Espirito Santo, Andres Villas-Boas, and Martin Jol all fell on their sword as well.

As we know, Ange Postecoglou is the latest man in the hot-seat and so far, is doing a good job.

Tottenham managers always seem to struggle

Of course, prior to those names being in charge, Tottenham went down the club legend route by hiring Glenn Hoddle back in 2001. However, just like everyone else, Hoddle never won anything and last just a couple of seasons.

Hoddle played more than 300 games for Tottenham and managed England. However, his time with Spurs never worked out.

And speaking about his time in charge of the club to Chris Cowlin’s YouTube show, Hoddle has admitted his time in charge of Tottenham left him feeling miserable.

“It’s too long to go through but, very quickly, it should have been the place where I was the happiest in management and it wasn’t, I was the unhappiest. And that says it all doesn’t it? As I wanted to do so much, so well for the club.

“But the politics of the club was wrong, there wasn’t any finances there, the squad didn’t have the right depth. It was a very frustrating time for me it really was but you know, you move on. Looking back, it was probably the most disappointing and the saddest time for me as a manager,” Hoddle said.

Glenn Hoddle comments sum up what it can be like at Tottenham

While Ange Postecoglou seems to be getting it right for Spurs at the moment, there’s a reason why the club has really failed to kick on over the years.

Hoddle’s comments here seem to cover it. It’s only really a short statement from Hoddle but he mentions the politics at the club, the depth of squad, and finances not being made available.

All those points ring true with what more recent managers have had to deal with as well.

Postecoglou seems to have a grip on things to be fair to him as it stands. And Hoddle, being the club legend he is, is always likely to be available to lend an ear to the Aussie.
