'5/10': Media outlets deliver their verdict on Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes after his Brazil debut

Media outlets around the world have delivered their verdict on Joao Gomes after the Wolves man made his debut for Brazil in a 1-0 win against England at Wembley.

Joao Gomes has had an incredible campaign to date. Upon signing in January 2023, the midfielder was part of a side that survived a season-long relegation battle.

Yet, in less than a year, he is now fighting to bring European football to Molineux under Gary O’Neil.

Joao Gomes has easily been one of Wolves’ best players this campaign and could well win Player of the Season at the club.

These performances have now been recognised by his country, with the 23-year-old receiving his first cap on Saturday night. Joao Gomes started as Brazil beat England 1-0 at Wembley.

With an impressive victory kicking off his career for his country, many media outlets from around the world have given their verdict on his performance.

It was seemingly a solid performance from Joao Gomes and he showed the world how much he had improved since leaving his homeland to move to England.

Goal.com gave the midfielder a 6/10, stating that while he was ‘anonymous’ with the ball, he covered plenty of ground at Wembley.

Squawka were more impressed by the Wolves man, commenting that he ‘did a good job disrupting England’s flow’. With the combative midfielder earning a 7/10.

Finally, 90min were less positive, describing his debut as “tentative”. The outlet believed that upon Kobbie Manioo’s introduction late in the second half he was given the ‘“literal runaround” before receiving a 5/10.

Joao Gomes set to only improve

While his performance may not have set the world alight on Saturday, Joao Gomes managed to see out a memorable victory.

England are cleary one of the favourites for the Euros in the summer and were on a 21-match unbeaten run at Wembley before the defeat.

Yet, on Joao Gomes’ first start for Brazil, he managed to suppress the threat the hosts held and saw out an impressive win.

With the midfielder only 23 years old, he will only continue to improve as the years go on and will no doubt be a regular for his country sooner rather than later.

If Wolves do look to cash in on Joao Gomes in the summer, this performance will have only increased his pricetag further. Matt Hobbs definitely needs to demand at least a record fee if the midfielder is to depart.
