'I think we can': Bruno Guimaraes shares what he believes can happen at Newcastle next season

Newcastle United will soon return to action.

While it has been nice to see the likes of Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes recognised for their contributions over the international break, it’s hard to get as excited about international friendlies as we will be for Newcastle contesting Premier League action.

Though this season hasn’t gone to plan at all for Eddie Howe, the squad will need to finish strongly to inspire confidence ahead of the next year’s campaign.

Indeed, on paper, there is still something to fight for. Newcastle could feasibly still qualify for European football in at least some capacity, be it either the Europa League or the Europa Conference League.

Whether or not Howe’s team are consistent enough to actually manage that is up for debate but it is on offer and they play West Ham after the international break, which affords Newcastle the chance to close the gap on the top seven to just one point.

Clearly, that would not have been the target before a ball was kicked this season and there’s no guarantee Newcastle will actually manage it but qualifying for Europe after this difficult a season would still be an achievement.

Guimaraes certainly believes it is still a possibility.

Newcastle news: Bruno Guimaraes outlines aim for next season

Speaking after Brazil’s win over England at Wembley on Saturday night, Guimaraes was asked by Talk Tyne and Wear reporter Daniel Wales (via X, formerly Twitter) on what Newcastle’s aim for the rest of the season was.

“Europe is our goal,” he said.

“I think we can get Europe for our fans. They deserve at least [for the team] to play in Europe again next season.”

Bruno Guimaraes: No guarantee Newcastle midfielder stays

Even if Newcastle were to do it, there is little guarantee Guimaraes actually stays.

Thought to be attracting interest from a host of big clubs, the fact the midfielder reportedly has a release clause worth around £100m in his contract leaves Newcastle powerless to stop him leaving should that offer emerge.

Reports even suggest the club are expecting Real Madrid to make a move this summer, which would surely be difficult to ward off given Guimaraes is thought to enjoy the idea of playing in Spain.
