Report: Chelsea now want 21-year-old to be their 'poster boy' despite Reece James being captain

Reports have claimed that Chelsea have one figure in mind in particular to become the poster boy of the club for the future.

This is according to GiveMeSport, who state that it is not Reece James they are looking to push in this role despite the fact that he has been named captain of the club.

James was handed the honour of leading the side after a number of senior players left the club either during or at the end of last summer.

Reece James injured

Things have not gone to plan this time around though, with him continuing to suffer from terrible injury luck, and eventually having surgery to look to put an end to it.

However, there is actually one player who the club have brought in within the last year that they have the confidence in to be the lead star for them going forwards.

Cole Palmer has been a revelation since Chelsea signed him on deadline day last summer, topping the charts for both goals and assists this season.

With the club still in the bottom half of the Premier League, it doesn’t bare thinking about exactly where they’d be if they hadn’t been able to rely on his brilliance.

Chelsea want Palmer as new poster boy

The combination of that talent as well as consistency has allowed Mauricio Pochettino an attacking star to build his side around, and this seems to have been in the thinking of some of the chiefs at the club regarding who they want people to think of when they mention Chelsea.

This is also despite the fact James is an academy graduate, and one of the only ones who remain in the first team after a number of sales.

The likes of Mason Mount have moved on from the club, with many pinning a lot of hope for the club on him before his transfer to Manchester United.
