‘Oh my word...’: Micah Richards blown away by what he saw Wolves star do live on international duty

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes has had his international debut highly commended by pundit Micah Richards following his display against England on Saturday night.

What a season it’s been for Wolves maestro, Joao Gomes.

The 23-year-old has seen his career elevate over the 2023/24 calendar, with his consistently outstanding performances for the Old Gold seeing him earn an international call-up.

Signed from Flamengo in January 2023, the Brazilian was an almost unknown prospect by those in Europe however, the midfielder has quickly rocketed himself into the spotlight.

Micah Richards praises the quality of Joao Gomes for Brazil

Earning his first call-up was one thing and being handed his full debut for Brazil against England at Wembley was another.

The £10k-a-week Wolves star was extremely impressive battling in a midfield containing the likes of Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham, seeing his display lauded.

One person who shared his joy over watching Gomes in action was pundit Micah Richards, who spoke highly of the midfielder on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“We have to give a shout-out to Gomes at Wolves, oh my word. What a player he is by the way.”

“I didn’t have a team sheet or my glasses on so I was like who is that one and the producer John said, stop being daft you know who that is.”

“And Gomes he is a player by the way. We don’t get to see Wolves too much on TV, but seeing him up close and personal. His touches, and seeing him when he wins the ball back, his weight of ball forward.”

“Sorry Wolves fans, he is going to the top level.”

Joao Gomes shone against England for Brazil

From a Wolves perspective, Richards’ analysis of the 23-year-old is unsurprising, given the level he performs at on a weekly basis for the Old Gold.

In the 90 minutes he played against England, Gomes completed 100% of his dribbles, made three tackles, three clearances and three interceptions, shining alongside Lucas Pacqueta and Bruno Guimaraes, via Sofascore.

Richards’ comments on the Brazilian going to the ‘top level’ come at a time when the midfielder has been linked with a move away in the summer although, it would be surprising to see him leave Molineux so prematurely.

Gomes’ quality has been unlocked by Gary O’Neil, as documented yesterday, giving Wolves the keys to not only reap the benefits of the 23-year-old’s on-field quality but, could financially benefit from the interest he is attracting.

For now, Wolves will be eager to get their prized midfielder back to Molineux ahead of the Premier League battle with Midlands rivals, Aston Villa, on Saturday evening.
