‘No’: Ally McCoist disagrees that £13m Newcastle player should have been called up to the England squad

Ally McCoist has disagreed with the suggestion that one of Newcastle United’s players should have been called up to the England squad for this international break.

England were beaten by Brazil at Wembley on Saturday night in what was a pretty poor performance as the defence looking particularly shaky at time.

A caller on talkSPORT believed that including one of Newcastle’s defender could help to solve Gareth Southgate’s issue, but McCoist completely disagreed with the claim.

McCoist not a fan of Newcastle man playing for England

Newcastle already had one debutant on the pitch as Anthony Gordon made his first ever appearance for England’s first team playing against teammate Bruno Guimaraes at the weekend.

However, one supporter believed that there wasn’t quite enough Newcastle player’s on the pitch and suggested that Southgate should have called up Dan Burn to help organise the defence.

Given England’s lack of depth at left-back Burn may have not been too far off of Southgate’s thoughts last season when he was a part of one of the best defence’s in the league and player a big role in Newcastle qualifying for the Champions League.

But this season has been a big contrast with the £13m signing coming under a lot of criticism after being targeted by a number of Premier League clubs recently for his lack of pace.

McCoist also doesn’t believe that Burn is the answer after his Newcastle form, though he is a fan of the player.

On Burn fixing England’s defence, McCoist said: “To fix the defence? No. I like those three words. Big Dan Burn. But I don’t think they are going to fix the England defence.”

Newcastle likely to replace Burn this summer

For most fans Burn would be struggling to get into this Newcastle side let alone receiving a call-up for England after some of the performances he’s put in this season.

Of course, it isn’t something he can help with his lack of pace, it’s down to Eddie Howe to acknowledge that weakness in the defence and to stop leaving him so exposed over on that left-hand side.

But the 46-year-old head coach has remained loyal to the former Brighton man despite the calls for him to be replaced with Lewis Hall struggling to get any playing time.

With a big summer window coming up now is the time to find Burn’s replacement for the meantime if Hall isn’t quite ready yet, and Newcastle are already looking at some options with Lloyd Kelly’s name being mentioned a few times now.
