'All the best': Guimaraes calls Gordon his unusual nickname again after Newcastle stars met at Wembley

Newcastle United were well represented at Wembley on Saturday night.

While Eddie Howe’s team as a whole have struggled for consistency this season, one man in particular has stood out.

Indeed, Anthony Gordon has put a difficult start to life at Newcastle behind him. The £40m winger has been billed as one of the Premier League’s best players this season and was rewarded for his fine club form with a first appearance for the England national team on Saturday.

The 23-year-old may have been unable to prevent a defeat to Brazil but it is broadly accepted Gordon performed well as a Three Lions player for the first time.

Elsewhere, teammate Bruno Guimaraes was anchoring the midfield for the away side and has been praised for his performance.

It was fantastic to see two Newcastle players representing two such storied nations, particularly with Gordon and Guimaraes having been so complimentary about each other in the build-up to the game.

They certainly seemed to enjoy it.

Naturally, Gordon took to Instagram after the game to celebrate such a monumental moment in his career, captioning a collage of himself in action: “A moment I’ve been dreaming about since I could kick a ball, an evening to remember. Another big game on Tuesday!”

In response, Guimaraes replied: “Great game bro!! All the best gordito.”

‘Gordito’ translates as “chubby” in English and is a nickname Guimaraes gave Gordon a while back.
