‘I think’: Fabrizio Romano offers update on future of ‘special’ midfielder amid Newcastle’s interest

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has been speaking on the future of a talented midfielder who Newcastle have previously shown interest in.

Eddie Howe will be looking to really strengthen his side this summer after a disappointing performance both in Europe and the Premier League this season.

In his Daily Briefing, Romano issued a transfer update on one of Arsenal’s players who looks like he could be leaving in the next few months with Newcastle one of the team’s considering a move.

Newcastle hoping to secure ‘special’ midfielder this summer

Newcastle’s midfield has really been missing that creative spark this season despite Bruno Guimaraes’ best efforts, and they could look to amend that issue in the summer.

There are a number of targets who have been named as possible solutions, and Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe certainly looks like one who will be put up on the market in the summer.

Newcastle have shown interest in the 23-year-old who saw his playing time significantly drop in the last two seasons, but the talent he showed the year before suggested he could be a top talent.

Smith Rowe had even gone on to make his England debut in 2021 having hit double figures for goals in the Premier League, and yet manager Mikel Arteta has really limited his opportunities since.

Injuries have also played a huge role in his playing time, but it does look like the best thing for the young man right now would be to start afresh in a different environment, and Newcastle could provide just that.

On Smith Rowe, Romano said: “Emile Smith Rowe’s future continues to be the subject of some speculation after a lack of playing time for Arsenal this season, while we also know there was interest from West Ham United back in January.

“In terms of what will happen in the summer, I think a lot depends on these final two months, how much he will play and be involved…and then Arsenal will make final decision together with the player. This is not something clear yet, so let’s wait and see how the situation looks after the final stages of the season.”

Smith Rowe has a point to prove

If there’s one thing that Howe loves in a player it’s someone who has a point to prove, something to drive them and make them work hard for the team to show others what they are missing or why they are wrong.

Just look at the likes of Joelinton or Anthony Gordon who has been written off as big wastes of money, and yet now they are two of Newcastle’s most key players this season.

Smith Rowe could soon follow suit with the midfielder enjoying such a bright start to his career before his major struggles in the last 18 months.

The once big concern for Newcastle would be his injury record – the very last things they will need is another player spending extended periods of time out of the squad after such a difficult season.
