Lost loot: Carjackers stole rental truck in North Bergen, but forgot to close back gate, police say

Three men carjacked a rental truck that full of cargo that had just been picked up in New York, but they lost almost all of their loot when they fled the North Bergen lot with the truck’s back gate still open Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

Making the story slightly more bizarre is that while one assailant sped off in the U-Haul carjacked from company’s facility at 6701 Tonnelle Ave., the other two assailants fled in a U-Haul van they had stolen, police said.

The 38-year-old victim, of Newark, told police he had returned to the U-Haul facility to pick up someone who was taking the cargo, and while at the facility he was struck over the head and on the back of his arms, police said.

One of the assailants demanded the keys to the truck and all three fled toward West Side Avenue. Most of the cargo fell out of the truck and was recovered, except for one box that remained inside the stolen truck, police said.

The victim told police that he left his jacket, which contained a significant amount of cash, in the truck, police said.

North Bergen police are investigating the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact tips@northbergenpd.com.
