'Sweet left foot': Journalist now compares exciting Newcastle transfer target to Manchester United legend

Newcastle United could be signing the next Bryan Robson if they get their transfer wish this summer.

There is expected to be a bit of a overhaul at St James’ Park this summer, with Eddie Howe eager to bring in a few fresh faces to liven up a squad that may have reached the end of its cycle.

But Newcastle United will also continue planning for the future, as they aim to bolster their youth ranks by recruiting the best teenage talent around. Trevan Sanusi has already made a major impression since his arrival, while Alfie Harrison also looks like a really exciting talent.

And if Newcastle get their wish, they could be joined by Chris Rigg this summer.

Newcastle are interested in Sunderland’s Chris Rigg

It was recently reported that Newcastle have a big interest in signing Chris Rigg from Sunderland this summer. The 16-year-old has not signed a professional contract with the Black Cats yet, and could be available for a bargain fee.

The Magpies are very keen, and will feel like they have an advantage given that Rigg comes from a Newcastle-supporting family.

It was claimed last month that Eddie Howe’s side are actually the favourites to sign the teenager, even though he is also attracting interest from Liverpool.

It will be a real coup if Newcastle can land Rigg, and the latest comments about him from the Daily Mail’s Craig Hope makes talk of a move to St James’ Park even more exciting.

Rigg is currently away on international duty, and represented England Under-17s during a 5-1 win over Northern Ireland.

The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope was at that game, and was very impressed with what he saw from Rigg.

He wrote: “Rigg, the South Tyneside-born captain wearing No.8, has a Bryan Robson-esque quality about him, especially given his bravery, engine and sweet left foot.”

That is incredibly high praise, as Bryan Robson is one of the best midfielders that England has ever produced.

The 67-year-old, who was born in Chester-Le-Street, had a legendary career with Man United. He played nearly 500 times for the Red Devils, winning two Premier Leagues, four FA Cups and much more.

His box-to-box energy made him a real force in the middle of the park, while he also had an eye for goal. Robson had it all, and Newcastle are interested in signing a teenager who has similar qualities.
