‘Should be enough’: Why Sheffield Wednesday could have big advantage in relegation battle - journalist

Sheffield Wednesday may have one big advantage over their relegation rivals going into their final eight games.

Sheffield Wednesday are agonisingly close to safety, having spent most of March within a point of 21st place.

The Owls have now endured back-to-back defeats against Leeds United and Ipswich Town, but will be raring to go after the international break as they head into the all-important final stretch.

Every point counts at the stage of this season, and it could all go down to one single match now, with only five points separating 16th and 23rd place in the Championship table.

Danny Rohl‘s side are set to face Swansea, Middlesbrough, QPR, Norwich, Stoke, Blackburn, West Brom and Sunderland, though it is their final outing to Wearside that journalist Dom Howson believes could give them the advantage.

Howson wrote on X: “4 wins “should” be enough for survival. If it goes to the last day, Sunderland is a good fixture. They will have nothing to play for.”

Sunderland currently sit 12th in the table and are one of the most out-of-form teams in the Championship, with six defeats in their last seven games.

The Black Cats are now 13 points from the playoffs and nine points above the relegation zone, so their season is already pretty much written off.

With supporters frustrated by recent results and the club in turmoil with their recent managerial situation, it could be a very drab showing on the final day of the season.

Where will the four wins come from for Sheffield Wednesday?

If the Owls can put themselves in a good situation to retain their Championship status on the final day – if they haven’t already – then they will be full of confidence heading north.

Howson alsoadded to his original post: “By contrast, Huddersfield, QPR and Blackburn have got Ipswich, Coventry and Leicester away on the final day respectively. Crucial IMHO that #SWFC pick up a minimum of three points from the Easter period. Boro have struggled at home this year – nothing to fear there.”

It could be the Sunderland clash that lands Sheffield Wednesday a spot in the second tier next term, but they do still need to do all the hard work beforehand.

Howson believes four wins should help them avoid the drop, and I would say home games against Swansea and Stoke would certainly be winnable. Danny Rohl’s side would also be disappointed if they didn’t take all three points from the trip to QPR too.
