23-year-old that could leave Tottenham on a free would solve Leeds issue, Bielsa wanted him in 2020 - opinion

For a number of years now, the left-back position at Leeds United has proved a frustrating one for managers come and gone – and those watching on from the stands. Ever since Charlie Taylor left.

When the Burnley defender left for Turf Moor almost seven years ago, Leeds were left in the lurch. In came Laurens De Bock, he flopped. They signed Barry Douglas in 2018, but injuries got the better of him.

Gjanni Alioski was converted into a left-back in the Premier League, but his performances were shaky at best. Stuart Dallas was almost too good for that position – eventually moving into central midfield.

More recently, Junior Firpo was signed from Barcelona – but the current Leeds man, away with the Dominican Republic this month – has never been able to replicate the form he did at Barcelona and Betis.

Ryan Sessegnon could leave Tottenham, Leeds should be alert

Firpo remains first choice but with a potential Premier League campaign on the horizon, it is an area that Leeds will need to address – without going crazy in terms of a transfer fee. Sam Byram is out of contract.

As is, Tottenham left-back Ryan Sessegnon. Once touted to become England’s long-term left-sided star, injuries have also hampered the England U21 man. Just one substitute outing has come his way this term.

Now,reports claim Spurs could allow Sessegnon to leave on a free transfer this summer. Tottenham have the option to extend his expiring contract by another 12 months – but a decision will need to be made.

The chances are, that Spurs will recognise Sessegnon needs a fresh start. Somewhere he can play regular football, but still in the Premier League. Leeds need a left-back and may be able to offer him that chance.

Bielsa liked Sessegnon, he is worth the risk for Leeds

Back in 2020, the summer in which Leeds had just been promoted under Marcelo Bielsa, the Whites were linked with a move for the flying lefty. But nothing materialised, instead Sessegnon staying at Spurs.

Fast forward four years, and signing Sessegnon would be a risk for Leeds. His injuries are non-stop at the moment. But, if Leeds can help him come out the other side, they have a proper player on their hands.

A player that has shown even his small career that he is clearly capable of shining in the Premier League, and even in Europe. Despite his injuries, his age will generate interest in a free deal. Leeds should move.

Especially, if Firpo stays. At least then, Leeds know they have a left-back in the former Barcrelona man that can cover him if required. But on a free, Sessegnon is worth the risk. Bielsa knew that.
