'He's fantastic': David Seaman says £27m Arsenal player has really kicked on and is now 'brilliant'

Arsenal have had their fair share of talking points over the course of the season and, with them flying high once again, the spotlight on the Gunners shines as bright as ever.

Will Arsenal finally win the Premier League title? Can they go all the way in the Champions League? Is Bukayo Saka truly world-class? And so on and so forth.

One talking point that began doing the rounds at the start of the season and routinely pops up again is that of the Gunners goalkeeping situation.

Last summer, Arsenal signed David Raya on an initial £3million loan deal from Brentford, with a £27million option to buy.

This was surprising as the Gunners had Aaron Ramsdale doing well in goal. And even more surprisingly, Mikel Arteta opted to replace Ramsdale with Raya when the former was seemingly doing no wrong.

Although the Spaniard has had some shaky moments at times this season, by and large he has been very impressive for Arsenal.

Arsenal legend David Seaman delivers David Raya verdict

Now, David Seaman, speaking on the Seaman Says podcast, has given his verdict on Raya, saying he has really kicked on and is now doing very well.

However, the Arsenal legend is concerned about Ramsdale’s England chances, saying he’s unlikely to get a look-in if he’s not playing.

Seaman said: “He (Raya) had a tricky time when he first came in.

“He’s obviously realised what playing for Arsenal meant and the pressures that that brings. He found it a little bit difficult, he was making mistakes that I could see and other goalkeeping coaches.

“But now he’s settled right in and you can see why Mikel wants him in there because of his ability with the ball at his feet, he’s fantastic. His passing. He’s brilliant on crosses. His stats on crosses are brilliant.

“It’s a good situation for Arsenal that we have these two brilliant goalkeepers but the problem is going to be for England.

“Where does that leave Aaron? Because he wants to push to be England’s number one. How is he going to do that when he’s not playing?”

Shame about Aaron Ramsdale situation but we all knew Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal is ruthless – opinion

Although it’s a shame that Ramsdale is now struggling for game time, it’s part and parcel of football. Besides, Arteta has been way more ruthless in the past with other players.

For instance, he froze out the likes of Mesut Ozil, Matteo Guendouzi and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. And Bernd Leno, who had also done well, was dethroned by Ramsdale and eventually he left.

So far, most of Arteta’s decisions have proven good in the long run. When he took the reins, the Gunners were a shadow of their former selves, more banter than brilliant. That’s not the case any more.
