‘Terrific’ 27-year-old could be the key to O'Neil finally fixing 4-year issue at Wolves - opinion

Wolves are reportedly leading the race to sign Southampton striker Che Adams this summer, as Gary O’Neil continues his hunt to secure a new striker at Molineux.

Wolves are reportedly already looking ahead to the summer transfer window in what is hoped to be a more successful time than the window of 2023.

The Old Gold suffered greatly last summer due to FFP restrictions that saw key players exit for funds and be replaced by no one, damaging the squad’s depth going into the 2023/24 calendar.

Luckily, Gary O’Neil has managed to get the squad he inherited from Julen Lopetegui both firing and competing, as Wolves remain in with a chance of securing European football with 10 games to go.

The summer will be an interesting one at Molineux, with reports now suggesting that the manager could finally be on course to deliver a goalscorer to Wolverhampton.

Update on Che Adams transfer to Wolves now provided

Earlier today, it was reported by journalist Mike McGrath that Wolves are ‘leading the race’ to sign Southampton striker, Che Adams.

The Old Gold have been heavily linked to the Scotsman over the past year, with it now looking as though a deal could be made in the summer.

McGrath reported that Wolves have the 27-year-old ‘firmly in their sights’ in a move that could be greatly beneficial to Fosun and O’Neil.

With his contract set to expire at the Saints in the summer, the Premier League outfit could secure Adams on a free transfer, keeping Wolves’ spending low and delivering them a player that the club has been yearning for.

Wolves have been desperate for a player like Che Adams

It’s been almost four years since Wolves saw a striker score more than 10 goals in the Premier League, with Raul Jimenez being the last to do so back in the 2019/20 campaign.

The Mexican netted 17 goals that season however, after his injury, the Old Gold were forced to find a different outlet for goals.

Since then, no striker has been identified as being capable of consistently putting the ball in the net, with Hwang Hee-chan coming closest by scoring 10 so far this term.

Interest in Adams, who was once lauded as “terrific” by Ally McCoist, comes at an interesting time at Molineux, with O’Neil ready to integrate a true number nine into his squad.

Having 97 domestic goals in his career, the Southampton ace definitely knows how to find the back of the net, with his best scoring season coming in the Championship as he netted 22 for Birmingham City.

This term, the 27-year-old has scored 10 so far for the Saints with a conversion rate of 18% from 17 starts, via Sofascore, suggesting that there’s a player there for O’Neil to revive back in the top flight.

Adams’ Premier League experience certainly comes as a plus for Wolves going into the transfer window, with the club not being able to afford to seal a deal for a player who’s unable to perform in the English game.

The likes of Fabio Silva and Goncalo Guedes have failed their auditions in the English top tier, making a move for Adams even more understandable with the player rising through the ranks in this country.

Only time will tell if Wolves will move closer to snatching the signature of the Scotland international, in a move that could benefit the Midlands club.
