Mauldons Brewery, based in the Chilton Industrial Estate, Sudbury, takes home bronze medal at SIBA Independent Beer Awards with Suffolk Pride

A Suffolk brewery took home the Bronze medal at a national beer competition recently.

Mauldons Brewery’s Suffolk Pride came in third place for Best British Bitter at the SIBA Independent Beer Awards, judging for which took place at BeerX in Liverpool on March 14.

The Sudbury-based brewers made it through to the national competition after taking home the Eastern region title in October.

Mauldons Brewery is part of the Nedging Hall Estate, with the barley used for its beers grown on the family farm just a few miles from its Chilton Industrial Estate base.

Charlie Buckle, managing director of the Nedging Hall Estate, said: “I am immensely proud of the team at Mauldons Brewery. This award is recognition of the hard work that goes in to producing a delicious pint of Suffolk Pride.

“I am also proud of Suffolk, the wonderful heritage, hospitality and countryside that we are so lucky to enjoy every day – so to win with a beer named after the county is brilliant.”

Suffolk Pride is amber in colour with a powerful bouquet if hops making for a dry finish, with head brewer Steve Birch describing it as ‘a full bodied brewers strong bitter’.

The SIBA awards judge a wide range of beers across a number of of style in the keg competition. The judging body is comprised mostly of brewers, making it one of the most prestigious recognitions in the industry.

Mr Birch said: “Brewing good beer is what we set out to achieve - picking up awards is the icing on the cake.”

This year’s competition saw more entries than ever before at the national level.

SIBA competitions chairperson Annell Baxter said: “It is incredibly tough to win a category Gold at a regional level, so to then go on and be named amongst the very best in the whole of the UK at the National Awards is a massive achievement that these brewers should be hugely proud of.”
