Former Sheffield Wednesday boss could qualify for Europa League next season after shocking Owls tenure

Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz could yet achieve an incredible feat this season.

For Sheffield Wednesday, both in terms of the football and the numbers, Munoz is their worst-ever manager to date.

And his record of 0 wins in 12 total matches will take some beating, with his successor Danny Rohl already having as many wins as Munoz had matches in charge, in just 30 games at the club.

Xisco Munoz Sheffield Wednesday record

Sheffield Wednesday earned promotion from League One via the play-offs last season and looked set for a promising, albeit tough year in the Championship under Darren Moore.

But Dejphon Chansiri kickstarted a season of turbulence when he and Moore parted ways, with a public feud ensuring in the weeks and months after.

Chansiri then actually interviewed Rohl for the job but chose Munoz instead.

A poor summer transfer window preceded a poor start to the season under Munoz who drew four of his 12 games in charge (technically, his side did claim a win, beating League Two Stockport County in the Carabao Cup on penalties).

Though Munoz’s Sheffield Wednesday tenure is statistically winless, with eight losses in total.

What club does Xisco Munoz manage now

Munoz took a surprising role next, taking charge of Slovakian top-flight side Dun Streda in November last year.

Since, Munoz has overseen 10 games in the Nike liga with four wins to his name.

Munoz has steered Streda into the Championship Group of the Nike Liga where they currently sit 4th of six teams competing for the European places.

Slovan Bratislava currently sit top and are 20 points ahead of Munoz’s Streda who currently sit in a Europa Conference League qualification position, but just four points behind Zilina in 3rd in the first of two Europa League qualification places.

Streda have eight games left to battle for a place in Europe next season.

Xisco Munoz Slovakian success shows levels to the game

Munoz was simply awful at Sheffield Wednesday. For a manager who won promotion from the second tier with Watford previously, he’s been schooled by Rohl in what is his first job as a manager.

Rohl has taken largely the same set of players and put 38 points on the board, whilst Munoz couldn’t buy a win as Sheffield Wednesday manager.

So the fact that Munoz could now be managing in Europe next season is quite baffling, and it’s almost a testament to the Championship and the quality it boasts these days.

Rohl and Sheffield Wednesday return to Hillsborough this weekend where they face Swansea City in the Championship.
