Oliver Glasner now wants Crystal Palace to sign £51m player compared to Diego Maradona, amid reports

Crystal Palace could be heading for a very interesting summer of transfer activity under Oliver Glasner and Dougie Freedman.

A story by the Daily Mail claims that Crystal Palace have just taken out a substantial loan – which is said to point towards a likely spending spree in the summer transfer window.

Interestingly, Oliver Glasner recently revealed that he and Dougie Freedman are already making recruitment plans at Selhurst Park, with discussions seemingly involving a very, very talented footballer…

Crystal Palace want a player compared to Diego Maradona

Well – according to A Bola – the Austrian has asked Crystal Palace to bring Marcus Edwards to Selhurst Park this summer.

The Portuguese news outlet mention that the Sporting CP No.10 has a release clause worth €60m (£51m) written into his contract, although the Primeira Liga outfit could negotiate a lower fee, as the attacker is keen on a move to the Premier League.

As aforesaid, Edwards has actually been compared to Maradona of all players.

It was Leon Osman – formerly of Everton and England – who made the comments after watching the Londoner tear Tottenham apart in the UEFA Champions League with Sporting CP back in 2022.

After Edwards embarked on a remarkable run, the BBC Sport pundit commented: “I can only describe it as similar to Maradona for Argentina against England in 86.

“He picked the ball up, he turns, there must have been six or seven Spurs players before he found himself inside the penalty, takes it around Romero and then toe-pokes it with his right foot.”

Edwards has made 38 appearances in all competitions for Sporting CP so far this season, scoring six goals while also providing eight assists.

Marcus Edwards would be a superb signing

If Freedman can talk Sporting CP down from the current £51m figure and negotiate a deal closer to £30m, this could prove to be a superb piece of business.

Edwards is one of the most exciting English attackers playing outside of the Premier League, with many actually baffled that Tottenham let him go in 2019.

The 25-year-old is incredibly skilful, adopting a similar playing style to the likes of Wilfried Zaha, and shouldn’t find it too difficult to settle in SE25 having grown up in Enfield.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as anything could happen in the summer.
